Year End Review

Annual Review

We thought we'd provide an update to our stakeholders as we turn the calendar from 2023 to 2024. We hope you'll consider a generous YEAR END Gift if you haven't already done so.

Financial Update

As one of our board members wrote just today..."Save Our Seabirds is doing fine...but we could always be better."

  • We raised $180,000 this year to build 6 new aviaries. The new habitats will serve as a model for how we will make much needed campus improvements in coming years.
  • We had a record breaking Sunset Soiree - raising over $525,000. Much of that money went into the Capital Fund account.
  • We grew our Capital Fund to $1.2 Million. This money will be used to build a new Hospital and rebuild the entire campus in coming years, and cannot be used to cover operating expenses.
  • The General Operating Fund LOST money. Increased expenses, combined with a noticeable drop in regular giving will leave us with a LOSS for the year in our General Operating Funds. Would you consider a generous year end gift to get us over the top?

Hospital & Rehab

Dr. Passarelli and her team continue to do an amazing job...supported of course, by our army of rescue and transport volunteers. Dr. Passarelli (and Save Our Seabirds) is increasingly being recognized as a leading voice in Florida avian rehabilitation.

  • Cases: 1,028 Cases in the hospital in 2023
  • Species: 110 different species seen
  • Releases: 235 birds released - 32 pending cases and 13 currently in the hospital
  • FWRA Lectures: Dr. Passarelli attended the Florida Wildlife Rehabilitators Association symposium this year and gave two lectures. One was on loon rescue and rehabilitation and one was a songbird rehabilitation roundtable.
  • Exoticscon Lectures: Dr. Passarelli also attended Exoticscon and gave a lecture on the 2021 Red Tide outbreak.
  • Medical Research: Dr. Passarelli is currently writing up the data from the 2021 Red Tide outbreak, providing data on the success rate of different treatments and is also involved in the writeup of a new method of testing for aspergillosis in common loons.
  • Local Speaking: In addition to the above contributions among her peers, Dr. Passarelli has become a very popular speaker locally - with many groups routinely inviting her to attend events and speak.
  • New Equipment: We were able to add some wonderful equipment in the hospital this year, including an Abaxis Vetscan (blood chemistry machine) and the Leadcare II (blood lead machine).
  • Interns: We took additional steps toward becoming known as a "Teaching" hospital - hosting two spring interns, two summer interns, and three fall interns. Our program is becoming sought after by many students and programs in Florida and beyond.
End of Year Gift

Wild Bird Learning Center

The "Wild Bird Learning Center" is the "public" face of our organization. Sometimes it has been called "the birdwalk," or even a "living museum." This part of our facility is licensed with United States Fish and Wildlife.

  • Expanded Education Programs: We greatly expanded our Educational program...including new signs, visual learning aids, a docent cart, and educational props.
  • More tours and events: We scheduled more learning activities and tours - and will be publishing events on our website and Facebook to increase participation. We've had 1300+ people participate in educational programs in the past 6 months.
  • Ambassador Training: We are training our resident birds daily to be able to participate in educational programs.
  • Improving our "Welcome:" We've added new signage at the entrances, including flags and updated information.
  • Daily Enrichment Activities: We've increased and improved daily enrichment activities for all birds - increasing and improving their quality of life.
  • Community Outreach: We've begun participating in more community events - actively educating the community about our organization and inviting them to visit and get involved.

Staffing Update

We have an amazing team - and it just keeps getting better!

  • We added a new Maintenance & Grounds position to the team. The addition of Leo Kissling has greatly enhanced our staff culture, and the increased manpower has enabled us to complete many more projects on campus.
  • We added Alex Torres as our Office Manager. Alex has great people skills and has proven to be a strong backbone for our office operations.
  • We added a "Director of Outreach and Avian Care." Sarah Rubin comes to us with a rich background in Avian Care and has benefit our organization greatly.
  • In October we were joined by a new Executive Director - Brian Walton. Brian comes to us with decades of effective nonprofit leadership experience.
  • We have added a number of experienced and well qualified Keepers. Overall, we believe we have enhanced and improved the team by adding several very passionate and well qualified individuals.
  • We have 11 full-time and 6 part-time staff members. This includes all Hospital, grounds, and office personnel. With this small team we take care of our birds 7 days a week/365 days a year - and we keep our WIldBird Learning Center open 365 days from 10am - 4pm.
